Buying Gold Jewelry from India: A Guide for International Customers

Purity standards, hallmarks, certificates, duties, shipping and returns — what to check before you buy fine jewelry from India online.

Why buy jewelry from India?

India has one of the oldest goldsmithing traditions in the world, and many of its workshops specialise in fine handwork — from delicate everyday chains to traditional 22K bridal pieces. Buying directly from an Indian jeweler can give you that craftsmanship at a fair price, as long as you know what to check.

Check the purity — and how it is proven

  • Gold purity is measured in karats: 9K, 14K, 18K and 22K are the most common for jewelry.
  • In India, gold jewelry is hallmarked under the BIS standard, which independently verifies the gold content.
  • Sterling silver should be stamped “925” (92.5% pure silver).
  • Ask how any purity that is not a hallmark grade is verified — we certify our 12K pieces by independent assay.

Diamonds and gemstones need a lab certificate

For diamonds and precious stones, look for a certificate from an independent laboratory such as IGI or GIA. The certificate number should be on the product page so you can check it on the lab’s website before buying.

Understand customs duties before you pay

Jewelry imported into the USA, Canada, the UK and the EU can attract customs duty and import VAT or sales tax. If the seller ships “DDU”, the courier will ask you to pay these on delivery — often an unwelcome surprise.

DM Gems ships DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to these countries: duties and taxes are included in the price you see, so there is nothing extra to pay at your door.

Shipping, sizing and returns

  • Choose insured express shipping with tracking and a signature on delivery for valuable pieces.
  • Ring sizes differ by country — use a US/UK/EU size chart and measure at the end of the day.
  • Read the returns policy: personalised and custom pieces are usually not returnable.
  • Pay in a currency you understand — we charge in US dollars and show an approximate local price for convenience.
